About Garbanzo Beans
Garbanzo beans are also called chickpeas, and are valued for their fiber content. In some parts of the world, Garbanzo beans are eaten daily and in large amounts. Most Garbanzo beans in the United States are cream colored and round, this type of Garbanzo bean is called Kabuli type, but world round, there is a more common chickpea called the Desi-type. Desi-type Garbanzo beans are smaller than Kabuli and can be varying in color from light tan to black. Chickpeas have digestive track support, lots of antioxidants, decrease cardiovascular risks, and better regulation of blood sugar. These beans have a nut-like taste and a buttery texture, yet they are somewhat starchy and pasty. Chickpeas originated in the Middle East, they were first cultivated in about 3000 BC. Garbanzo beans were grown in Egypt, Greece, and Rome; today, they are mainly grown in India, Pakistan, Ethiopia, and Mexico. This bean, along with black turtle beans, kidney beans, lentils, lima beans, pinto beans, navy beans, and soybeans are on the list for the world’s healthiest foods!
